Log Cabin endorses gay-supportive GOP candidates

by John Farina

Cleveland—Log Cabin Republicans of Cleveland have endorsed several area Republican candidates who have either demonstrated or indicated strong support for the gay and lesbian community.

The following candidates posses not only the skills and experience required for their respective positions, they have a strong willingness to work with the gay and lesbian community on issues important to us. Of course, whomeyer you support, please remember to vote on November 3.

Governor and Lt. Governor: Bob Taft and Maureen O'Connor.

A Taft/O'Connor administrationwilloffer leadership for many issues important to our community. With the strong support of lieutenant governor candidate Maureen O'Connor, the administration will be able to provide leadership in securing additional AIDS funding and improved hate crimes legislation.

O'Connor has also expressed an interest in the area of gay and lesbian youth issues. They have made a commitment to maintaining an 'open door' policy and welcome the

input of our community. We believe the Taft-O'Connor team is the most qualified to lead Ohio into the next century.

State Representative, 15th District: James Peter Trakas.

There has been no Republican Party chairman who has been more supportive to the Cleveland lesbian and gay community than Jim Trakas.

He has been active in pursuing the support of the gay community, including making an appearance this year at Pride and the Stonewall primary candidates night. He has openly supported Log Cabin and has ap-

pointed several gays and lesbians to key leadership posts in the Cuyahoga County Republican Party.

Jim will be a welcome change for our community in this district. He will be ready to hear the concerns of our community and will be a voice of support in the Ohio House. Jim Trakas is a man of integrity and sincerity, he has worked hard to gain our support and rightfully deserves it.

State Representative, 16th District: Sally Conway Kilbane.

Sally Conway Kilbane is one of the strongest candidates being offered for the Ohio House this year. She is not only a well qualified individual, but has demonstrated a willingness to work with the gay and lesbian community on issues of our concern. Sally's personal experience with our community will give her an edge over other legislators. Our community would do well to send Sally Conway Kilbane to Columbus.

Cuyahoga County Recorder: Elizabeth Schnitzspahn. The name is not one you are likely to forget, nor is the woman. Elizabeth Schnitzspahn's greatest strength is her ability to work with people and bring out their best-something that is sorely lacking in the current county recorder. Her opponent [incumbent Patrick J. O'Malley] is someone the Plain Dealer called "temperamentally unfit for public office."

Her management style is inoffensive and professional, she will be welcome in this office, no doubt. Elizabeth Schnitzspahn is also committed to hiring and employing the most qualified people for her office and will have a non-discrimination policy in her administration.

While the functions of the office are important, the position need not be an elected one. Liz will work to clean up the recorder's office and eventually eliminate it, saving taxpayers millions of dol-

lars. Liz' commitment to our community is a strong one and we look forward to seeing her run for further elective office. Elizabeth Schnitzspahn is the best and most qualified for this job, we urge you to vote for her.

Court of Common Pleas-Juvenile Court: Colleen M. O'Toole.

Colleen M. O'Toole is a highly qualified attorney who will represent a compassionate, yet firm view in the Juvenile Court. Her trial experience has brought her before this court many times and she is well versed in the important responsibility she hopes to assume. The Cuyahoga County Bar Association gives Colleen a “Recommended" rating, as do we. Colleen will also be an advocate for the rights of the individuals who are best suited to be parents, regardless of sexual orientation. We recommend your vote for Colleen M. O'Toole.

In addition, the following candidates also receive the endorsement of Log Cabin Republicans of Cleveland:

George Voinovich, U.S. Senate

Grace L. Drake, U.S. House, 13th District Steven LaTourette, U.S. House, 19th District

Matthew Rodriguez, State Representative, 17th District

Dan Roth, Court of Common Pleas Kathleen S.-Craig, Court of Common Pleas Richard G. Lillie, Court of Common Pleas

John Farina is president of the Cleveland chapter of Log Cabin Republicans.
